Key takeaways
- Africa has no shortage of opportunities. Thousands of scholarships, grants, jobs and tenders are published every week. The problem is that they are scattered across thousands of websites and six languages.
- If you only search in English, you miss what is published in French, Portuguese, Arabic, Kiswahili and Spanish. The reverse is just as true.
- Most deadlines are two to four weeks away. Most opportunities are lost to time, not to competition.
- Seven habits below will help you find more of them. VeriAfrica does the searching for you, from US$2 a month.
Maybe it was a fully funded master’s scholarship announced in French. A grant for young entrepreneurs posted on a ministry website in Mozambique. A government tender in Côte d’Ivoire that your company could have won. A job in Kigali that matched your profile exactly.
Africa doesn’t have an opportunity shortage. It has a visibility problem.
In 2026, solving that problem is what separates the people who keep applying from the people who keep missing out.
The real problem: opportunities are scattered, not scarce
Every week, governments, universities, foundations, development banks and companies across Africa publish thousands of opportunities. But they publish them:
- On thousands of different websites, from ministry portals to embassy pages
- In different languages: English, French, Portuguese, Arabic, Kiswahili and Spanish
- With short deadlines, often two to four weeks
- With no single place that brings them together
Most popular opportunity websites only cover what is published in English. If you only read English, you miss everything published in French and Portuguese, and the same is true the other way round.
A real example: some 2026 fellowships targeted only Francophone countries, such as the Mythbusters Fellowships in Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal. Other programmes, such as the Embassy of France in Uganda Master’s Scholarships, opened French-funded study to applicants in an English-speaking country. Unless you were watching both worlds, you missed one of them.
Why this matters more than ever
Africa is trading and building with itself faster than ever. Intra-African trade rose 5.47% to an estimated $213.8 billion in 2025. That growth creates contracts, jobs, partnerships and funding calls across borders. We explain where they come from in Intra-African trade in 2026: the AfCFTA opportunities.
Yet trade within Africa remains small: roughly 15% of the continent’s total trade, compared with about 60% within Asia and close to 70% within Europe. Part of that gap is information. Businesses simply don’t know what their neighbours are buying. We call it the invisible border, and it costs Africa billions.
Some regions are almost invisible. Central African start-ups have attracted only 0.8% of the investment going to Africa since 2019. The talent and ideas are there. The visibility isn’t.
Who is missing out?
- Students miss scholarships because the best ones are often announced in a language they don’t read, on a site they don’t know.
- Job seekers miss roles in neighbouring countries, even though regional integration makes it easier than ever to work across borders.
- Young entrepreneurs miss grants, accelerators and funding calls that close before they hear about them.
- Small businesses miss tenders and supply contracts in the market next door, which larger, better-connected competitors win instead.
7 ways to find more opportunities in Africa in 2026
1. Search beyond your own language
Search “bourse” as well as “scholarship”, “appel d’offres” as well as “tender”, “bolsa” as well as “grant”. A large share of Africa’s opportunities is published outside English.
2. Look 90 days ahead
The best applicants don’t chase deadlines, they plan for them. Keep a calendar of opportunities closing in the next three months.
3. Think regionally, not just nationally
ECOWAS, the EAC, SADC and CEMAC all create cross-border openings. African Union programmes are open across the continent, such as the African Union Internship Program 2026, with applications open until 31 December 2026.
4. Prepare your documents before you need them
CV, motivation letter, recommendation letters, certified transcripts and, for businesses, company registration documents. Most opportunities are lost to time, not to competition.
5. Watch official sources
Government procurement portals, embassy pages, university announcements and development bank websites publish first. Aggregators come later, sometimes too late. For tenders, our practical guide to finding and winning public tenders in Africa lists the main portals country by country.
6. Verify before you apply
Fake scholarships and fraudulent tenders are everywhere. Never pay an “application fee” to an organisation you don’t know, and always confirm the opportunity on the official website.
7. Let technology do the searching
No one can manually track thousands of websites in six languages every day. That is exactly why we built VeriAfrica.

Frequently asked questions
What opportunities are available for Africans in 2026?
Thousands: fully funded scholarships, fellowships, internships, start-up grants, accelerator programmes, government tenders and jobs across all 54 African countries. The challenge isn’t availability, it’s finding them in time.
Where can I find scholarships for Africans published in French or Portuguese?
Most English-language opportunity sites miss them. VeriAfrica collects opportunities in all six official African Union languages and translates them, so you can read and apply whatever the original language.
How can my business find tenders in other African countries?
Government procurement portals publish tenders separately in each country and language. VeriAfrica gathers them into one feed and helps you find verified local partners to bid with.
How do I avoid fake scholarships and tender scams?
Never pay an application fee to an organisation you can’t verify, check the official website, and be careful with offers that seem too generous. VeriAfrica adds a human verification layer for this reason.
How much does VeriAfrica cost?
Dispatch costs US$2 a month and opens every job, internship, scholarship, fellowship, grant and tender. Pro, Premium and Institutional plans serve businesses, chambers of commerce and agencies.
